Getting around

How to get around in Tanger

In practice

Inner Tangier (medina + Ville Nouvelle) is very easy to explore on foot. The blue petit taxis are numerous and cheap. To explore Cape Spartel, Achakkar, Chefchaouen, Tetouan, or Asilah, a car is by far the most practical — public transport exists but is slow and incomplete. And of course, for Tanger Med (40 km), a car avoids a lot of hassle.

Car rental

Everything about renting in Tanger

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.

Renting in Tangier: TNG airport, center, or Tanger Med port?

Tanger-Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is 12 km west of the center, a 20-min drive. Major rental desks are lined up at the arrivals exit. The center (Avenue Mohammed V, Boulevard Pasteur) concentrates independent agencies. Tanger Med port (40 km east) also offers a few desks for those arriving by ferry from Spain.

Our rule: if you arrive by plane and go on a Chefchaouen/Tetouan road trip, pick up the car at TNG. If you arrive by ferry at Tanger Med, pick it up directly at the port — you avoid the shuttle bus (45 min). If you arrive by high-speed train, rent in the city center, no surcharge.

  • TNG Airport: open until the last flight, ~10–15 % surcharge
  • Tanger Med: useful if arriving by ferry, more limited choice
  • High-speed train station (Tanger Ville): drop-off possible with some major rental companies

How much does a rental cost in Tangier?

Growing market thanks to the high-speed train and Tanger Med port. Prices slightly higher than Marrakech but below Europe. As an indication (daily, basic insurance, 7 days):

  • City car (Sandero, i10): 240–330 MAD / day (24–33 €)
  • Compact (Clio, Polo, Yaris): 330–460 MAD / day (33–46 €)
  • Compact SUV (Duster, Captur, T-Cross): 460–680 MAD / day (46–68 €)
  • Comfort sedan for the coast (Megane, Passat): 550–800 MAD / day
  • Peak rates in July-August (MRE influx), book 1 month in advance

Conditions, deposit, and insurance

Credit card mandatory, deposit 5,000 to 15,000 MAD depending on the category. Minimum age 21, young driver surcharge common up to 25.

Third-party liability included, CDW and theft highly recommended given the heavy traffic and risk of winter hazards. Premium credit card? Check coverage before doubling up on insurance.

  • National driver's license (1 year of experience) or international permit
  • « Full-to-full » fuel policy preferred
  • Unlimited mileage with the majority
  • Leaving Morocco (Spain by ferry) prohibited by almost all rental companies — notify in advance

Driving in Tangier and the region

Tangier is relatively easy to drive in outside of rush hours (8-10 am, 5-7 pm on Boulevard Mohammed V). The medina is pedestrian-only: leave the car at Grand Socco or a guarded parking lot.

Outside the city, the A4 to Tanger Med, the A1 to Rabat, and the N2 to Tetouan/Chefchaouen are in very good condition. Be vigilant on the N2 in the Rif: curves, high-altitude fog, presence of the Royal Gendarmerie.

  • Speed limits: 60 km/h in the city, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on highways
  • Speed cameras on the A1, A4, and A7 — zero tolerance
  • Fuel 13–15 MAD/L diesel
  • Medina parking: Grand Socco guarded parking (~30 MAD / 24 h)

Safety & advice

Good to know before you go

  • Tangier is safe, but like any large Mediterranean port, keep an eye on your belongings in the medina and at Grand Socco.
  • Fake guides very present around the kasbah: a firm « no, thank you » is usually enough.
  • Be cautious on the N2 to Chefchaouen at night: narrow roads, animals, two-wheelers without headlights.
  • Useful numbers: 19 (police), 15 (ambulance), 177 (royal gendarmerie).
FAQ

Frequently asked questions — Tanger

The questions we get most often by message.

Is it better to rent in Tangier city centre or at the airport?

If you plan to spend a day or two on foot in the medina, on the corniche, or at the Kasbah, rent in the city centre so you don't pay for a car that sits at the hotel. If you are leaving Tangier immediately for Chefchaouen, Tetouan, or Asilah, pick up the vehicle at the airport.

Can I get the car delivered to my hotel in Tangier?

Yes, the majority of reliable local agencies offer free or low-cost delivery to your hotel (Malabata, city centre, Cap Spartel). This is very convenient, especially if you arrive via the Tanger Med port.

What budget should I plan for in Tangier?

Expect 20–30 € per day for a city car and 35–55 € for an SUV in low season. Prices rise sharply in July-August, during the MRE period and holidays.

Is it difficult to drive in Tangier city centre?

Traffic is smoother than in Casablanca but can be dense in the centre, at the Grand Socco, and around the port. Avoid the medina (very narrow, partially pedestrianized) and opt for guarded car parks.

Can you drive to Chefchaouen or Tetouan from Tangier?

Yes, Tetouan is about 1 h away and Chefchaouen is 2 h away via a scenic route. It is one of the most popular road trips from Tangier.

Do I need a credit card for the deposit?

Yes, Moroccan terminals require a real credit card (marked "Credit"). Debit cards are frequently refused for blocking the deposit.
