Tanger — Gateway to the Strait, Mediterranean-Atlantic crossroads
Tangier, a booming metropolis, is the northern entry point to Morocco: 14 km from Spain, Tanger Med port (1st in Africa), Al-Boraq high-speed train from Casa and Rabat. White medina, panoramic kasbah, Cape Spartel, and direct access to Chefchaouen, Asilah, and Tetouan.
The real reasons that make the difference when planning your stay.
White medina perched on the strait, panoramic kasbah overlooking Tarifa
Cape Spartel: Atlantic-Mediterranean meeting point, Caves of Hercules
Cosmopolitan architecture: legacy of the international zone (1923-1956)
Tanger Med port: ferry to Algeciras / Tarifa, day trips to Spain
Base for Chefchaouen (2 h), Asilah (40 min), Tetouan (1 h)
Climate, crowds and surf season at a glance.
Ideal season: 18–25 °C, clear skies, sea still cool but magnificent light.
Superb late season, sea still warm (22 °C), fewer crowds. Our favorite period.
25–30 °C, crowds on the beaches (Achakkar, Robinson), hotel prices up 30–50 %. Book 2 months in advance.
Mild but windy and rainy winters (eastern chergui, Atlantic levant). Ideal for the medina and kasbah without crowds.
The right neighborhood changes everything: vibe, parking, distance to the beach.
White heart perched on the strait. Petit Socco, 9 April Square, Kasbah Museum. Car impossible: Grand Socco parking.
Legendary cafes (Hafa, Gran Café de Paris), bookstores, traditional hotels. Walkable from the medina.
4 km beach east of the city, club hotels, restaurants. Car essential.
Northwestern tip of the continent, lighthouse, Caves of Hercules, wild beaches. 15 km away, car essential.
Port 40 km east. For ferries to Spain. Not a place to stay, but shuttle / car mandatory.
Our cliché-free selection, from must-see highlights to genuine local tips.
Ancient perched fortress. Museum in the Dar el-Makhzen palace (Roman mosaics from Volubilis). Plunging view of the strait.
Legendary, frequented by Bowles, Genet, Kerouac, the Rolling Stones. Mint tea facing Tarifa. No reservations.
Atlantic-Mediterranean meeting point. 1864 lighthouse, sea caves shaped like the map of Africa. 30 min from the center.
Souks, weaving workshops, heritage cafes. Quieter and whiter than those of Marrakech or Fez.
Wild Atlantic beach 14 km away. Waves, wind, seaside seafood restaurants.
Tanger Med → Tarifa crossing in 1 h. Schengen visa required, watch out for customs lines. Memorable excursion on the strait.
Distances, driving times and what to expect on site.
Legendary Blue City of the Rif. Doable as a day trip but an overnight stay is a thousand times better. N2 road in good condition.
Small fortified white town, murals, beach. Perfect day trip, even more so in June (festival).
UNESCO medina, Andalusian heritage. Much less visited than its reputation suggests. Ideal half-day.
Atlantic-Mediterranean meeting point, lighthouse, Caves of Hercules, wild beaches. Must-do half-day trip.
Strait crossing, Andalusian town, surf and kite. Schengen visa mandatory. Memorable day.
Small Spanish-Moroccan port and Phoenician-Roman site of Lixus. Little-known, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere.
Inner Tangier (medina + Ville Nouvelle) is very easy to explore on foot. The blue petit taxis are numerous and cheap. To explore Cape Spartel, Achakkar, Chefchaouen, Tetouan, or Asilah, a car is by far the most practical — public transport exists but is slow and incomplete. And of course, for Tanger Med (40 km), a car avoids a lot of hassle.

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.
Tanger-Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is 12 km west of the center, a 20-min drive. Major rental desks are lined up at the arrivals exit. The center (Avenue Mohammed V, Boulevard Pasteur) concentrates independent agencies. Tanger Med port (40 km east) also offers a few desks for those arriving by ferry from Spain.
Our rule: if you arrive by plane and go on a Chefchaouen/Tetouan road trip, pick up the car at TNG. If you arrive by ferry at Tanger Med, pick it up directly at the port — you avoid the shuttle bus (45 min). If you arrive by high-speed train, rent in the city center, no surcharge.
Growing market thanks to the high-speed train and Tanger Med port. Prices slightly higher than Marrakech but below Europe. As an indication (daily, basic insurance, 7 days):
Credit card mandatory, deposit 5,000 to 15,000 MAD depending on the category. Minimum age 21, young driver surcharge common up to 25.
Third-party liability included, CDW and theft highly recommended given the heavy traffic and risk of winter hazards. Premium credit card? Check coverage before doubling up on insurance.
Tangier is relatively easy to drive in outside of rush hours (8-10 am, 5-7 pm on Boulevard Mohammed V). The medina is pedestrian-only: leave the car at Grand Socco or a guarded parking lot.
Outside the city, the A4 to Tanger Med, the A1 to Rabat, and the N2 to Tetouan/Chefchaouen are in very good condition. Be vigilant on the N2 in the Rif: curves, high-altitude fog, presence of the Royal Gendarmerie.
Indicative prices in Moroccan dirhams (MAD), per person.

The questions we get most often by message.
If you plan to spend a day or two on foot in the medina, on the corniche, or at the Kasbah, rent in the city centre so you don't pay for a car that sits at the hotel. If you are leaving Tangier immediately for Chefchaouen, Tetouan, or Asilah, pick up the vehicle at the airport.
Yes, the majority of reliable local agencies offer free or low-cost delivery to your hotel (Malabata, city centre, Cap Spartel). This is very convenient, especially if you arrive via the Tanger Med port.
Expect 20–30 € per day for a city car and 35–55 € for an SUV in low season. Prices rise sharply in July-August, during the MRE period and holidays.
Traffic is smoother than in Casablanca but can be dense in the centre, at the Grand Socco, and around the port. Avoid the medina (very narrow, partially pedestrianized) and opt for guarded car parks.
Yes, Tetouan is about 1 h away and Chefchaouen is 2 h away via a scenic route. It is one of the most popular road trips from Tangier.
Yes, Moroccan terminals require a real credit card (marked "Credit"). Debit cards are frequently refused for blocking the deposit.
