Getting around

How to get around in Rabat

In practice

Rabat is the easiest major Moroccan city to navigate without a car: tramway (2 lines), blue petit taxis with fair rates, fast train to Casablanca (1 h) and Tangier (1 h 20 via Al Boraq). However, as soon as you want to explore the beaches, Meknes, or Chefchaouen, a car becomes essential.

Car rental

Everything about renting in Rabat

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.

Rent in central Rabat or at Rabat-Salé Airport?

Rabat-Salé Airport (RBA) is located 10 km northeast of the center, about 15 to 20 min via the N6 bypass. It's a small regional airport: 3-4 rental desks (Avis, Hertz, Europcar) open during flight hours. Central Rabat, on the other hand, has around twenty agencies, mostly around Agdal and Avenue Mohammed V.

Our rule: if you arrive by plane and start a road trip on day 1, pick up the car at RBA. If you arrive by train from Casablanca, Tangier, or Marrakech (Rabat-Ville or Rabat-Agdal station), rent in the city center: no transfer needed, prices often lower.

  • RBA Airport: few flights, airport surcharge ~10%
  • Rabat-Agdal Station: 3 agencies a 5-min walk away, ideal after Al Boraq Casa/Tangier
  • One-way rentals Rabat ↔ Casablanca often free with major rental companies

How much does a rental cost in Rabat?

Rabat is one of the cheapest cities in Morocco for car rentals (less tourist demand than in Marrakech or Agadir). Indicative daily rates, basic insurance, 7 days:

  • Economy (Sandero, i10): 220–300 MAD / day (22–30 €)
  • Compact (Clio, Polo): 300–420 MAD / day (30–42 €)
  • Compact SUV (Duster, Captur): 420–600 MAD / day (42–60 €)
  • Comfort sedan / 4×4: 650–1,100 MAD / day (65–110 €)
  • Save 15-20% by booking 2 weeks in advance

Conditions, deposit, and insurance

Credit card mandatory (Visa/Mastercard, debit refused) in the main driver's name. Deposit blocked between 5,000 and 15,000 MAD depending on the category. Minimum age 21, young driver surcharge common up to 25 years old.

Third-party insurance is always included. Add CDW (collision damage waiver) and theft protection for peace of mind. Many premium credit cards already cover rentals — check before paying for the waiver.

  • License: valid national driver's license (1 year minimum)
  • Fuel: "full-to-full" policy is the majority
  • Mileage: unlimited with most rental companies
  • Child seats: 50–100 MAD / day

Driving in Rabat and the region

Rabat is the easiest capital to drive in Morocco: wide boulevards, clear signage, drivers more disciplined than elsewhere. Heavy traffic is concentrated on the Hassan II bridge (towards Salé) during rush hours (8-9 am, 6-7 pm) and on Avenue Mohammed V.

The A1 towards Tangier (260 km, toll ~70 MAD) and the A3 towards Casablanca (90 km, ~25 MAD) are impeccable. The N6 towards Meknes is free, slower but pleasant.

  • Speed limits: 60 km/h in the city, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on highways
  • Numerous fixed speed cameras on A1 and A3 — stay alert
  • Paid parking in the center (5-10 MAD/h), informal parking attendants everywhere
  • Residential neighborhoods: blue zones, watch out for tow trucks
