Rabat is the easiest major Moroccan city to navigate without a car: tramway (2 lines), blue petit taxis with fair rates, fast train to Casablanca (1 h) and Tangier (1 h 20 via Al Boraq). However, as soon as you want to explore the beaches, Meknes, or Chefchaouen, a car becomes essential.

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.
Rabat-Salé Airport (RBA) is located 10 km northeast of the center, about 15 to 20 min via the N6 bypass. It's a small regional airport: 3-4 rental desks (Avis, Hertz, Europcar) open during flight hours. Central Rabat, on the other hand, has around twenty agencies, mostly around Agdal and Avenue Mohammed V.
Our rule: if you arrive by plane and start a road trip on day 1, pick up the car at RBA. If you arrive by train from Casablanca, Tangier, or Marrakech (Rabat-Ville or Rabat-Agdal station), rent in the city center: no transfer needed, prices often lower.
Rabat is one of the cheapest cities in Morocco for car rentals (less tourist demand than in Marrakech or Agadir). Indicative daily rates, basic insurance, 7 days:
Credit card mandatory (Visa/Mastercard, debit refused) in the main driver's name. Deposit blocked between 5,000 and 15,000 MAD depending on the category. Minimum age 21, young driver surcharge common up to 25 years old.
Third-party insurance is always included. Add CDW (collision damage waiver) and theft protection for peace of mind. Many premium credit cards already cover rentals — check before paying for the waiver.
Rabat is the easiest capital to drive in Morocco: wide boulevards, clear signage, drivers more disciplined than elsewhere. Heavy traffic is concentrated on the Hassan II bridge (towards Salé) during rush hours (8-9 am, 6-7 pm) and on Avenue Mohammed V.
The A1 towards Tangier (260 km, toll ~70 MAD) and the A3 towards Casablanca (90 km, ~25 MAD) are impeccable. The N6 towards Meknes is free, slower but pleasant.
Indicative prices in Moroccan dirhams (MAD), per person.

The questions we get most often by message.
For holders of a European driving licence, an international driving permit is generally not mandatory. However, it is highly recommended to have it in addition to your national licence to avoid any misunderstandings.
Most rental agencies require a credit card (not a debit card) to block the deposit. Always check the agency's conditions before booking.
Parking can be paid and sometimes difficult in busy areas of the city centre. It is advisable to use guarded car parks or to inquire about authorized parking zones.
Yes, Moroccan motorways, notably the A1 towards Casablanca and the A2 towards Kenitra, are toll roads. Bring change or a compatible payment card.
From Rabat city centre, you can easily reach the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Andalusian Gardens, Chellah, and modern districts like Agdal and Hay Riad. Excursions to Casablanca, Kenitra, or even Fez are also possible.
Compared to other major Moroccan cities, traffic in Rabat is generally fluid and well-structured, especially on the main roads. However, as in any capital, traffic jams can occur during rush hours.
