Tétouan — The Andalusian "White Dove" of the North
A UNESCO-listed medina since 1997 with Andalusian and Hispano-Moorish heritage, Tetouan is the gateway to the Rif mountains and the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. Just 40 min from the beaches of M'diq and Cabo Negro, 1 hr from Chefchaouen, and 1 hr from Tangier: the perfect base for exploring the North by car.
The real reasons that make the difference when planning your stay.

Tetouan has no train. CTM/Supratours buses connect Tangier, Chefchaouen, and Casablanca, while shared grand taxis shuttle to M'diq, Martil, and Chefchaouen. But to explore the Rif, the beaches, and combine with Chefchaouen, a car is by far the most flexible — and inexpensive — solution.

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.
Tetouan-Sania Ramel Airport (TTU) is tiny: 5 km southeast of the center, 10 min by car. Only a few seasonal flights (Spain, Belgium, France). On-site, 2-3 counters open only during flight times.
Most travelers arrive via Tangier-Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG, 60 km) and reach Tetouan by taxi or bus. In this case, renting a car directly at TNG is often the best option: drop-off in Tetouan is possible without fees at major rental companies. Otherwise, several agencies are open in the Ensanche (Mohammed V avenue).
Tetouan is one of the cheapest cities in Morocco for renting (low international tourist demand). Indicative daily rates, basic insurance, 7 days:
Credit card mandatory (Visa/Mastercard) in the main driver's name. Deposit 5,000 to 12,000 MAD. Minimum age 21, young driver surcharge up to 25 years old.
Check the CDW coverage: the Rif roads (towards Chefchaouen, Akchour) are winding and narrow, bodywork scratches are frequent.
Tetouan center is compact and easy. Avoid the medina by car (narrow alleys, one-way streets): park at Bab El Okla or Moulay El Mehdi square (parking attendant 10 MAD).
Towards Chefchaouen and Akchour, the N2 then the P4105 are paved but winding: allow plenty of time, be careful with trucks and goats. Towards Tangier, the N16 (coastal) is fast and beautiful.
Indicative prices in Moroccan dirhams (MAD), per person.

The questions we get most often by message.
Sania Ramel Airport receives very few flights: the majority of travelers arrive via Tangier or by road. Renting in the centre of Tetouan or having the car delivered to your hotel is therefore almost always simpler.
Yes, this is very common in Tetouan, M'Diq, Cabo Negro, and Martil. Most reliable local agencies deliver for free in this area.
Expect 20–30 € per day for a city car, 35–55 € for an SUV in low season. As everywhere in the north, prices soar in July-August (beach season and MRE).
The modern centre is easy to drive in, but avoid driving into the medina (very narrow streets, partially pedestrianized). Park at the Moulay El Mehdi Square or Bab Okla car parks.
Chefchaouen (1 h), M'Diq / Cabo Negro (20 min), Martil (15 min), Tangier (1 h), and the Mediterranean coast up to Oued Laou and Jebha.
Yes, Moroccan terminals require a credit card (marked "Credit"). Debit cards are frequently refused.
