Best time to visit Morocco: overview

Morocco spans 8 different climates: oceanic in the north, Mediterranean along the north coast, Atlantic on the west coast, continental in Marrakech and Fez, mountainous in the Atlas, desert in the south. No single season is perfect everywhere — choose based on your itinerary.

Month by month

January–February

  • Marrakech / Fez: 18–22°C by day, 5–10°C at night. Sunshine almost guaranteed.
  • Coast (Tangier, Casablanca): 12–17°C, frequent rain.
  • Desert: 18–22°C by day, cold nights (0–5°C).
  • Atlas: snow likely. Skiing at Oukaïmeden.
  • Verdict: great for cities and the desert, poor for the coast and swimming.

March–May (★)

  • Marrakech: 20–28°C, perfect.
  • Fez: same.
  • Coast: 18–24°C, sea still cool.
  • Desert: 25–32°C.
  • Atlas: wildflowers, hiking.
  • Verdict: the best overall season. Crowds growing but still manageable.

June

  • Marrakech / Fez: 28–35°C, starting to get hot.
  • Coast: 22–28°C, ideal.
  • Desert: 35–42°C, already tough.
  • Atlas: stunning.
  • Verdict: good everywhere except the desert. Gnaoua festival in Essaouira.

July–August

  • Marrakech / Fez: 38–45°C in the afternoon. Hard going without a pool.
  • Coast: 22–28°C, ideal. Sea warm enough.
  • Desert: unbearable by day, pleasant at night.
  • Atlas: 18–25°C, perfect — but busy.
  • Verdict: stick to the coast or to the mountains.

September–November (★)

  • Marrakech: 25–30°C in September, 18–25°C in November. Excellent.
  • Fez: same.
  • Coast: 20–26°C.
  • Desert: 25–35°C.
  • Verdict: matches spring. Crowds easing, softer prices.

December

  • Marrakech / Fez: 16–22°C by day. Cool nights.
  • Desert: pleasant days, cold nights.
  • Coast: 14–19°C, rain.
  • Verdict: great for cities and the desert, except for the Christmas week (very expensive).
