Why visit Marrakech
Marrakech is probably the most emblematic city in Morocco, and often the first stop on a trip. UNESCO-listed medina, palaces, gardens, gastronomy, boutique hotels, direct access to the desert and the Atlas Mountains: everything is concentrated here.
It’s also the most touristy city in the country. You’ll feel it in the medina, but with a little preparation, the experience remains intense and memorable.
What to see in Marrakech
Place Jemaa el-Fna
Beating heart of the medina, listed by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage. Storytellers, snake charmers, monkey handlers by day; street food stalls, Gnawa musicians by night. Cafe terraces (Argana, Glacier) offer the best views.
Souks
North of Jemaa el-Fna, a maze of specialist lanes: Smarine (textiles), Cherratine (leather), Haddadine (blacksmiths), Attarine (spices). Allow 2 to 3 hours to get lost.
Madrasa Ben Youssef
A former 16th-century Quranic school, one of the finest examples of Marinid architecture. Courtyard, pool, mosaics. ≈5 €.
Bahia Palace
19th-century palace, gardens, painted ceilings, mosaics. Half an hour to one hour. ≈7 €.
Saadian Tombs
16th-century royal necropolis, rediscovered in 1917. Exceptional decor. ≈7 €.
Majorelle Garden and YSL Museum
In Guéliz, the blue garden created by Jacques Majorelle and restored by Yves Saint Laurent. Very busy: book online. ≈12 € for the garden + 10 € for the YSL museum.
Menara and Agdal Gardens
Quieter, free, perfect at the end of the day. Reflecting pool and olive groves.
Koutoubia Mosque
77 m minaret, twin of Seville’s Giralda. Outside visit only (mosque closed to non-Muslims). Magnificent when lit in the evening.
Mellah district
Former Jewish quarter, synagogue, spice market.
