Taxi vs car rental in Morocco: the honest comparison
Taxis are everywhere in Morocco: colourful petits taxis in town, shared grands taxis between regions, and more recently ride-hailing apps such as Careem or InDrive. A rental car follows a radically different logic — total independence, but total responsibility too.
This comparison decides on three criteria: real cost, flexibility and mental load. No bias: we say when the taxi wins and when renting is the answer.
Comparing real fares
- Petit taxi in town — 10 to 30 MAD per ride, metered or agreed upfront. Unbeatable for 2–3 rides a day.
- Shared grand taxi — 20 to 80 MAD between neighbouring cities, but it leaves with six passengers and comfort is basic.
- Ride-hailing (Careem, InDrive) — 30 to 80 MAD in town, no haggling, card payment possible. 30 to 50% more than a metered petit taxi.
- Car rental — 200 to 400 MAD/day in the economy category, plus 80–150 MAD/day of fuel depending on use.
When the taxi clearly wins
- A 2–4 day city break in a single city (Marrakech medina, Fes medina, central Casablanca).
- A beach stay with one hotel as your base (Agadir, Saidia).
- Solo travellers or couples without heavy luggage.
- You are not comfortable driving abroad.
