A Morocco city break without a car: 4 cities where it works
Not everyone wants — or needs — a rental car in Morocco. For a 3 to 5 day city break in a single city, a car is often more burden than asset: awkward parking, pedestrian medinas, dense urban driving. Here are the four cities where going car-free is genuinely the better experience.
1. Marrakech — going car-free in the medina is compulsory
The Marrakech medina is pedestrian. You cannot reach your riad by car, and even luggage travels by hand or on a cart. For 3–4 days around Jemaa el-Fna, the souks and the Majorelle Garden, petits taxis (10–20 MAD a ride) are all you need.
- Train from Casablanca airport (2h45, ONCF, 140 MAD).
- Airport bus L19 to Jemaa el-Fna (30 MAD).
- Petits taxis and carriages for getting around town.
2. Fes — the densest medina in the world, no car needed
Fes el-Bali counts more than 9,000 lanes, all closed to cars. Three days around the Bou Inania madrasa, the Chouara tanneries and Seffarine square are done entirely on foot. To reach the Ville Nouvelle (station, modern restaurants), red petits taxis are quick and cheap (15–25 MAD).

3. Tangier — kasbah, medina and literary cafés on foot
Historic Tangier (medina, kasbah, Petit Socco, Café Hafa) fits inside one square kilometre. The train from Casablanca (Al Boraq, 2h10) drops you in the heart of the city. For Achakar beach or the Caves of Hercules, a grand taxi for the day (300–400 MAD agreed upfront) replaces a rental car nicely.
4. Essaouira — the most walkable town in Morocco
Essaouira is a gem: a compact UNESCO-listed medina, a fishing port, the Skala ramparts and a huge beach, all within a 15-minute walk. From Marrakech, Supratours runs five coaches a day (2h45, 80 MAD). There is no reason to rent a car for an Essaouira city break.

- Airport transfer both ways: 60–200 MAD depending on the city and mode.
- Petits taxis around town: 80–150 MAD a day on average.
