Getting around

How to get around in Nador

In practice

Nador has a railway station (direct Casablanca-Nador line), a regional airport, and a large ferry port (Beni Ensar). But to explore Marchica, Cap de l'Eau, Gourougou, and the coast towards Saïdia or Al Hoceïma, a car is by far the easiest and most liberating solution.

Car rental

Everything about renting in Nador

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.

Rent in Nador center or at Al Aroui airport?

Nador-Al Aroui Airport (NDR) is 25 km southwest of the center, or 30 min via the N2. A small regional airport with daily flights to Brussels, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Paris, and Marseille. 4-5 rental desks open during flight hours.

If you arrive by plane to start an Oriental road trip (Saïdia, Al Hoceïma), pick up the car at NDR: zero transfers. If you arrive by ferry in Beni Ensar or by train, renting in the city center is more convenient (10-15 agencies around Boulevard Mohammed V).

  • NDR Airport: airport surcharge ~10-15%
  • Center: major agencies + locals, negotiable prices outside summer
  • NDR ↔ center cross-return generally included

How much does a rental cost in Nador?

Nador follows the low prices of the Oriental, except in July-August when the influx of MREs causes demand to explode. Indicative daily rates, basic insurance, 7 days:

  • Economy (Sandero, i10): 200–280 MAD / day (20–28 €)
  • Compact (Clio, Polo): 280–400 MAD / day (28–40 €)
  • Compact SUV (Duster, Captur): 400–600 MAD / day (40–60 €)
  • July-August peak: +40-60% (booking 4 weeks in advance is imperative)
  • Outside summer: unbeatable rates, economy cars at 180 MAD/day possible

Conditions, deposit, and insurance

Credit card mandatory (Visa/Mastercard) in the driver's name. Deposit 5,000 to 12,000 MAD. Minimum age 21, young driver surcharge up to 25 years old.

Crossing to Melilla: almost always prohibited by contract. Check imperatively before departure — some local rental companies accept it for an insurance surcharge.

  • Valid national driver's license (1 year minimum)
  • Fuel: « full-to-full » policy
  • Unlimited mileage with major rental companies
  • Melilla: check the contract clause before any crossing

Driving in Nador and around Marchica

Nador center is easy to drive in outside of summer. In July-August, traffic is heavy (Boulevard Mohammed V, corniche) due to the MRE and tourist influx. Parking with attendants everywhere (5-10 MAD).

The N2 towards Oujda and Saïdia is fast and well-maintained. The Gourougou road is winding but beautiful. For Al Hoceïma, the coastal N16 is spectacular but slow (2 hrs 30 for 150 km).

  • Speed limits: 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on highways
  • Fixed speed cameras on N2 — stay vigilant
  • Fuel: 13–15 MAD/L, stations everywhere
  • Melilla border: long crossing in summer, prohibited in rentals
