Getting around

How to get around in Marrakech

In practice

The medina of Marrakech is pedestrian and labyrinthine: no need to enter by car. Petit taxis (beige) are numerous and cheap within the city. To explore the Atlas Mountains, Ourika, Essaouira, or Ait Benhaddou, a rental car remains the most flexible and often the most economical option for 2 or more people.

Car rental

Everything about renting in Marrakech

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.

Renting in Marrakech: Menara Airport or city center?

Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK) is only 6 km from the center, about a 15–20 min drive. The desks of major rental companies (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget) are lined up at the arrivals exit and open until the last flight. The center gathers independent agencies, mostly around Avenue Mohammed V (Gueliz) and Hivernage.

Our rule: if you start a road trip from day 1 (Atlas, Sahara, Essaouira), pick up the car at the airport — you avoid the transfer (~150 MAD) and save the morning. If you plan to spend 2-3 days inside the medina before moving, renting in the city center avoids paying for an idle car.

  • RAK Airport: airport surcharge ~10–15%, maximum choice
  • Gueliz Center: independent agencies, more aggressive rates in low season
  • One-way rentals (center ↔ airport) often free with major rental companies

How much does a car rental cost in Marrakech?

Marrakech being the most competitive market in Morocco, prices are among the lowest in the country. As a guide (daily rate, basic insurance, 7-day rental):

  • Economy (Dacia Sandero, Hyundai i10): 220–300 MAD / day (22–30 €)
  • Compact (Clio, Polo, Yaris): 300–420 MAD / day (30–42 €)
  • Compact SUV (Duster, Captur, T-Cross): 430–620 MAD / day (43–62 €)
  • 4×4 essential for the Sahara or dirt tracks (Tucson, Sportage): 700–1,100 MAD / day
  • Price peak during year-end holidays, February, and Easter: book 1 month ahead

Conditions, deposit, and insurance

Credit card mandatory (Visa or Mastercard) in the main driver's name to block the deposit: 5,000 to 20,000 MAD depending on the category. Minimum age 21, "young driver" surcharge up to 25 years old depending on the rental company.

Third-party liability insurance (TPL) is always included. For peace of mind, add the collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection. Many premium bank cards (Visa Premier, Gold) already cover this — check before paying for double coverage.

  • License: valid national license (1 year of experience), international license if non-Latin
  • Fuel: "full-to-full" policy preferred, refuse "full-to-empty"
  • Mileage: unlimited with most rental companies
  • For the Sahara: notify the rental company, some forbid unpaved tracks

Driving in Marrakech and the region

Marrakech city center is dense, noisy, and chaotic: scooters everywhere, carts, horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians. Avoid driving in the medina, and even in Gueliz during rush hour. Prefer parking and walking / taking a petit taxi.

Outside the city, it's much simpler. The A7 towards Casablanca (240 km, ~70 MAD toll) is impeccable. The N9 towards Ouarzazate via the Tichka Pass is sublime but requires 4 hrs of careful driving — tight bends, slow trucks, frequent fog at the pass.

  • Speed limits: 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on highways
  • Numerous fixed speed cameras on the A7 — zero tolerance
  • Diesel fuel: 13–15 MAD/L, gas stations everywhere on main routes
  • Medina parking: guarded parking lots around Jemaa el-Fna (20–30 MAD / 24 hrs)

Safety & advice

Good to know before you go

  • Marrakech is generally safe, but stay vigilant in the medina (solicitations, fake guides, direction scams).
  • No photos of people without permission — the demand for baksheesh is almost systematic otherwise.
  • Tap water not recommended, mineral water 6 MAD / 1.5 L everywhere.
  • Useful numbers: 19 (police), 15 (ambulance), 177 (royal gendarmerie outside the city).
