The medina of Marrakech is pedestrian and labyrinthine: no need to enter by car. Petit taxis (beige) are numerous and cheap within the city. To explore the Atlas Mountains, Ourika, Essaouira, or Ait Benhaddou, a rental car remains the most flexible and often the most economical option for 2 or more people.

Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.
Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK) is only 6 km from the center, about a 15–20 min drive. The desks of major rental companies (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget) are lined up at the arrivals exit and open until the last flight. The center gathers independent agencies, mostly around Avenue Mohammed V (Gueliz) and Hivernage.
Our rule: if you start a road trip from day 1 (Atlas, Sahara, Essaouira), pick up the car at the airport — you avoid the transfer (~150 MAD) and save the morning. If you plan to spend 2-3 days inside the medina before moving, renting in the city center avoids paying for an idle car.
Marrakech being the most competitive market in Morocco, prices are among the lowest in the country. As a guide (daily rate, basic insurance, 7-day rental):
Credit card mandatory (Visa or Mastercard) in the main driver's name to block the deposit: 5,000 to 20,000 MAD depending on the category. Minimum age 21, "young driver" surcharge up to 25 years old depending on the rental company.
Third-party liability insurance (TPL) is always included. For peace of mind, add the collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection. Many premium bank cards (Visa Premier, Gold) already cover this — check before paying for double coverage.
Marrakech city center is dense, noisy, and chaotic: scooters everywhere, carts, horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians. Avoid driving in the medina, and even in Gueliz during rush hour. Prefer parking and walking / taking a petit taxi.
Outside the city, it's much simpler. The A7 towards Casablanca (240 km, ~70 MAD toll) is impeccable. The N9 towards Ouarzazate via the Tichka Pass is sublime but requires 4 hrs of careful driving — tight bends, slow trucks, frequent fog at the pass.
Indicative prices in Moroccan dirhams (MAD), per person.
| Item | Backpacker | Mid-range | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riad / hotel (night, double) | 280 MAD | 700 MAD | 1,800 MAD |
| Meals | 45 MAD | 140 MAD | 350 MAD |
| Car rental / day | 240 MAD | 400 MAD | 700 MAD |
| Activity / excursion | 120 MAD | 350 MAD | 900 MAD |
| Total / day / pers. | ≈ 400 MAD | ≈ 900 MAD | ≈ 2,000 MAD |
The questions we get most often by message.
Yes, parking can be a challenge in Marrakech’s historic centre (medina). It is advisable to use the monitored car parks located on the edges of the medina or in the Guéliz district.
For holders of a European driving licence, an international permit is generally not required. For other nationalities, it is strongly recommended, or even mandatory depending on the agency.
Most agencies require a credit card for the deposit. Some may accept a debit card with full insurance and a higher deposit, but this is rare.
The high tourist season (spring and autumn) sees increased prices and reduced availability. Booking in advance is crucial during these periods. Summer is cheaper but the heat can be intense.
Many agencies offer this service, often for an additional fee. It’s best to check directly with the agency when booking.
Yes, some motorways in Morocco are tolled, especially those connecting major cities. Have local currency ready for these charges.
