Agadir — Seaside capital of southern Morocco
Rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, Agadir is today a modern seaside resort: 10 km of Atlantic beach, mild climate year-round, and direct access to the surf spots of Taghazout, the Anti-Atlas valleys and the Agafay desert.
The real reasons that make the difference when planning your stay.
10 km fine sand beach bordered by a safe pedestrian corniche
Mildest climate in Morocco, ideal in winter (18–22 °C)
Starting point to Taghazout, Imsouane, Paradise Valley, Taroudant
Mature tourist infrastructure: hotels, riads, restaurants, surf schools
International airport with direct flights to France, the UK, Germany
Climate, crowds and surf season at a glance.
Ideal season to escape the European winter. Temperatures from 18 to 25 °C, sea still swimmable until mid-November. Hotel rates rise from Christmas to January 5.
Mild summer thanks to the trade winds (rarely >30 °C by the sea). High family crowds in July-August, book your car in advance.
The best Atlantic swells for the spots of Taghazout, Anchor Point and Imsouane fall between October and March.
The right neighborhood changes everything: vibe, parking, distance to the beach.
Along the bay: club hotels, restaurants, marina, supervised beach. Paid but easy parking during the day.
Rebuilt post-earthquake neighborhood, Moroccan cafes, small grocery stores, independent rental agencies. More authentic than the corniche.
Recent residences, seafood restaurants, marina. Good base if you are renting an apartment with your family.
One of the largest souks in Morocco (6 000 stalls). Ideal in the morning. Avoid going by car on Sundays: heavy traffic.
Ancient fortress perched at 236 m, 360° view over the bay. Now accessible by cable car (since 2023) — free parking at the bottom.
Our cliché-free selection, from must-see highlights to genuine local tips.
10 km of pedestrian and cycling promenade between the marina and Anza beach. Unmissable sunset.
5 minutes ascent, panoramic view of the bay, the port and the Anti-Atlas. ~85 MAD round trip.
Spices, pottery, argan, clothing. Haggling is a must. Closed on Mondays.
30 min north by car. Anchor Point, Killer Point, Banana Beach — from beginner to pro.
Botanical park with Nile crocodiles, 15 km away. Perfect family outing if you have children.
Argan, rassoul, black soap scrub: all the major hotels in the tourist sector offer a spa.
Distances, driving times and what to expect on site.
Surfer village and palm oasis in the Atlas. Combinable in one day. Winding but paved P1001 road.
The longest right-hand wave in Africa for surfers. Fishing village, grilled fish restaurants.
The "Little Marrakech": intact ochre ramparts, Berber souks. Excellent as a day trip.
Heart of the Anti-Atlas: painted rocks, almond trees, Berber villages. Overnight stay recommended.
UNESCO medina, fishing port, constant wind. Possible as a day trip, better in 2 days.
Spectacular beach between Mirleft and Sidi Ifni. The main arch collapsed in 2016 but the site remains superb.
Agadir stretches over 12 km long: on foot, you remain a prisoner of the corniche. Taxis (orange petit taxis) are cheap within the city but impossible to find past Founty. To explore towards Taghazout, Taroudant or Paradise Valley, a rental car is the simplest and most economical solution for 2 or more people.
Prix réels, sans frais cachés. Filtrez par type de véhicule, transmission et politique carburant.
Prices, conditions, driving: the full guide, no fluff.
Agadir-Al Massira Airport (AGA) is located 25 km southeast of the center, a 25 to 35 min drive via the N10. Major rental desks (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt) are open there until the last flight arrives. The center concentrates independent agencies and a few major brands near Hassan II Avenue and the tourist zone.
Our simple rule: if you arrive by plane and go on a road trip from J+1, pick up your car directly at the airport — you save a taxi transfer (≈ 300 MAD) and a day. If you arrive by CTM/Supratours bus, or if you plan to spend 2-3 days at the hotel before moving, renting in the city center makes more sense.
Prices vary with the season and duration. As an indication (daily rate, basic insurance included, 7 days rental):
Almost all rental companies require a credit card (Visa or Mastercard, immediate debit refused) in the main driver's name to block the deposit — generally 5 000 to 15 000 MAD depending on the category. The minimum age is 21, often with a "young driver" surcharge up to 25 years old.
Third-party insurance (TPL) is always included. To drive with peace of mind, add CDW coverage (excess waiver) and theft protection. Check if your premium card (Visa Premier, Gold Mastercard) already covers the rental — this is often the case.
Good news: Agadir is undoubtedly the easiest major Moroccan city to drive in. Thanks to the post-1960 reconstruction, the boulevards are wide, straight and well signposted. Heavy traffic is concentrated during rush hours (8-9 h and 18-19 h) on Hassan II Avenue.
On the highway side, the A7 towards Marrakech (250 km) is a toll road (~75 MAD) and impeccably maintained. The N1 towards Taghazout is free, panoramic and winding — expect 45 min instead of the advertised 25 min.
Indicative prices in Moroccan dirhams (MAD), per person.
| Item | Backpacker | Mid-range | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel (night, double) | 250 MAD | 600 MAD | 1 500 MAD |

| Total / day / pers. | ≈ 350 MAD | ≈ 800 MAD | ≈ 1 800 MAD |
The questions we get most often by message.
No, a valid national driving licence (European or other) is generally sufficient if you are a tourist and your licence is written in Latin characters. For non-Latin licences, an international driving permit may be required.
Most agencies require a credit card for the deposit. Some local agencies may accept a cash deposit, but this is less common and often comes with stricter conditions.
Yes, parking is relatively easy in Agadir, especially compared to other major Moroccan cities. There are many paid parking lots and street parking spaces. Pay attention to regulated parking zones.
Yes, the A7 motorway connecting Agadir to Marrakech is a toll road. If you plan on taking long trips, make sure to have some change for the tolls.
Driving at night in Agadir is generally safe on well-lit main roads. However, be vigilant on secondary roads and outside the city, where lighting may be limited and the presence of animals or pedestrians more frequent.
Yes, most major agencies offer options to return the car to a different agency (for example, pick up in the city centre and return to Agadir-Al Massira airport). Additional fees may apply for this service.
