Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Morocco?
Yes — almost always. Here is exactly what Moroccan rental counters ask for, how large the deposit is, and what to do if you only travel with a debit card.
The short answer
To rent a car in Morocco with an international agency (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise), you need a physical credit card in the main driver's name, with enough available limit to block the deposit (500 – 1,500 €).
Debit cards, prepaid cards, virtual cards and cards belonging to someone else are refused at the counter — even if they display a Visa or Mastercard logo. This is the number-one reason travelers are turned away.

Why credit only? The deposit explained
When you pick up the car, the agency doesn't charge the deposit — it places a pre-authorization hold on your credit line. The money is frozen but not spent. If you return the car undamaged, the hold is released after 7 to 30 days.
Only a true credit card can hold funds this way. A debit card can only debit the account in real time, which means the agency would have to either:
- actually take the deposit out of your account (locking real cash for weeks), or
- trust that you will pay for any damage after the fact — which no international agency will do.
Local Moroccan agencies sometimes offer option one. Big brands never do.
How much deposit will be blocked?
| Vehicle category | Example models | Typical hold (€) | Typical hold (MAD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini / Economy | Dacia Sandero, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto | 500 € | 5,500 MAD |
| Compact | Renault Clio, VW Polo, Peugeot 208 | 700 – 900 € | 7,500 – 10,000 MAD |
| SUV / Family | Dacia Duster, Peugeot 3008, Hyundai Tucson | 1,000 – 1,200 € | 11,000 – 13,000 MAD |
| Premium / 4x4 | Toyota Land Cruiser, BMW X3, Mercedes GLA | 1,500 € + | 16,000 MAD + |
The deposit is a pre-authorization hold, not a charge. It reduces your available credit for 7 – 30 days after return.
What counts as a "credit card" at the counter
Accepted
- Visa Credit or Visa Gold (physical, embossed number)
- Mastercard Credit, Gold or World Elite
- American Express (accepted at Hertz, Avis and Europcar — check at booking, not universal)
- Bank-issued credit cards in the driver's name only
Refused
- Any debit card, including Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard
- Standard Revolut, Wise, N26, Bunq (debit products)
- Prepaid cards and gift cards
- Virtual cards (Apple Pay / Google Pay virtual numbers)
- Any card not in the main driver's name
- Cards close to their credit limit
Tip: the word "Credit" or "Debit" printed on the front of the card is what the counter agent checks. Look at your card now — if it says "Debit", plan ahead.
What if you don't have a credit card?
- 1
Book with a local Moroccan agency that accepts cash deposit
Independent agencies in Marrakech, Agadir and Casablanca often accept a cash deposit (5,000 – 15,000 MAD) in place of a card hold. Book by email in advance and confirm the exact amount in writing. Expect stricter mileage caps and no travel to Western Sahara.
- 2
Have a friend or partner rent under their name
The person whose credit card is used must be the main driver on the contract. You can be added as a secondary driver (usually 5 – 10 € / day). Both driving licenses have to be shown at pickup.
- 3
Get a proper credit card before you travel
Most European banks issue a basic Visa/Mastercard credit card on request within 2 – 3 weeks. Revolut Premium and N26 Metal include a credit card in some countries. Apply before booking, not the week you fly.
- 4
Skip the rental and use public transport
The ONCF train network covers Casablanca, Rabat, Fès, Marrakech and Tanger with fast, cheap connections. CTM and Supratours buses reach Essaouira, Chefchaouen, Merzouga and Agadir. For most first trips, no car is needed.

What to bring to the rental counter
- Physical credit card in the main driver's name, unlocked for foreign use, with 1,500 € of available limit.
- Passport (photocopy is not accepted).
- Driving license, valid for at least 1 year. EU / UK / US / Canadian licenses are accepted as-is; an International Driving Permit is recommended but rarely mandatory.
- Printed or PDF booking confirmation (agents sometimes ask, especially at Marrakech Menara airport).
- Second card as backup, in case the first is declined for the pre-authorization.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Morocco?
Almost always yes. International agencies (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget) require a physical credit card in the main driver's name to block the security deposit (typically 500–1,500 €). Debit cards, prepaid cards and virtual cards are refused for the deposit, even if they carry a Visa or Mastercard logo.
Can I use a debit card in Morocco?
Some local Moroccan agencies accept a debit card, but they will usually ask for a much larger cash deposit (often 5,000–15,000 MAD) instead of a card pre-authorization. Expect stricter mileage limits and no cross-border coverage. Read the small print carefully.
How much deposit do rental companies block?
500 € for a small car (Dacia Sandero, Hyundai i10), 800–1,200 € for a compact/SUV, 1,500 € or more for premium vehicles and 4x4s. The amount is pre-authorized (not debited) and released 7–30 days after the return, depending on your bank.
Are Revolut, Wise or N26 cards accepted?
Their standard cards are debit cards and are refused for the deposit at international agencies. Revolut Premium/Metal and N26 Metal include a physical Visa/Mastercard credit card in some regions — check the exact product name before you travel. When in doubt, bring a real credit card as a backup.
What if I arrive without a credit card?
You have three options: (1) switch to a local agency that accepts a cash deposit, (2) add a driver in your group who does have a credit card in their name (name on the card must match the main driver), or (3) cancel and use trains, CTM buses and taxis instead — feasible for most itineraries between Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fès and Tanger.
Does the card need to be in the driver's name?
Yes. The credit card must belong to the main driver named on the rental contract. A card from a spouse, parent or friend will be refused at the counter, even for a joint account. This is the single most common reason travelers are turned away.
Can I pay the rental itself with a debit card?
Yes — once the credit-card deposit is blocked, you can pay the rental invoice with any card (or cash for local agencies). The credit card is required for the deposit, not for the payment.
